The best way to fix your posture

Whose voice do you hear when you think of “posture”? Your parents? Your granny?

Perhaps the many teachers and coaches who drilled you into sitting up straight and not slouching, or had you standing to attention for hours on end.

There are many variations of this “bad posture” idea around today, and most of them will blame various pains and ailments on slouching, sitting badly or standing askew.

However, there is NO scientific correlation between “bad posture” and pain. In fact, many people have terrible posture, but have no pain; whereas others have pain, but “perfect posture”.

Human bodies are designed to move in many ways and many directions, each of which needs to be practiced regularly. They are not designed to stay in any one position for very long. In fact, it seems that the real cause of “posture-related pain” may not be the exact posture you are in, but how long you stay there.

So, to fix your posture, you need to:

·         Move regularly. Keep changing your body position. Sit, stand, walk.  Make sure your day is filled with regular turning movements.

·         Do familiar tasks in unusual ways.

·         Consider regular exercises, especially “core” exercises and general movement patterns.

·         Encourage your co-workers and friends to do the same with you.

·         Consider a strengthening programme.
