Why sitting all day hurts - And what you can do about it

Most of us spend hours sitting everyday - at a desk, behind the wheel, or on the couch.

While sitting itself isn't ‘bad’, staying in one position for too long can leave your body feeling stiff, sore and tired.

What happens when you sit for too long ?

Your body is designed to move! When you stay seated for prolonged periods the following occurs:

  • muscles become less active , particularly around your hips, core and back

  • joints become stiff from staying in a limited position for too long

  • your posture may gradually change, especially when you start slouching or leaning towards your screen

  • blood flow decreases in inactive muscles, this contributes to the heavy and uncomfortable feeling felt

HOW SITTING ALL DAY AFFECTS THE BODY

So, what should you do?

Try these simple habits

  • You might start by simply taking a short break from sitting and move around every 30-60 minutes

  • Change positions by alternating between standing and sitting where possible

  • Move your rubbish bin away from your desk so you have to get up to throw anything away.

  • Performing quick stretches at your desk

  • Regular exercise and strength training targeting your back, core, and legs can help you tolerate longer periods of sitting more comfortably.

Try these quick desk/home exercises

These exercises can be done from your desk or while waiting for the kettle to boil …

  • Sit to stand x10 (squats)

  • Calf raises x10

  • High knee marching

  • Thoracic extension

  • Shoulder rolls

  • Short walk

Regular exercise and strength training targeting your back, core, and legs can help you tolerate longer periods of sitting more comfortably.

If sitting is consistently causing neck, back or other pain, a physiotherapist can assess the cause and help you develop an exercise plan suited to you.

Remember: Move often, don't wait for pain to tell you it's time to move.
